Subject: Cyprus Medical Association support toward the

Turkish Medical Association (TMA)

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great regret that we were informed by the Global Medical Community that eleven TMA’ s council members are in custody, kept by police forces, after TMA published a press release on the 24th of January 2018. Moreover, it came to our knowledge that TMA’s offices have been searched and the Turkish authorities confiscated all the hard-disks of the Association which included complaints and confidential data about physicians and patients.

Furthermore, Amnesty International has reported that members of the TMA were “subjected to threats of violence”, and called on people to submit appeals to the Ankara governor’s office in order to provide additional security measures for the union and its members.

Please note that a few days ago, in the occupied side of Cyprus, an angry mob of ultranationalists attacked the building of Africa newspaper, which published an article saying that Turkey’s military operation in Syria was like Turkey’s invasion in Cyprus. Prior to the incident, the President of the Turkish government, Mr. Tagip Erdogan, expressed his anger over the article, calling “on my brothers in north Cyprus to give the necessary response.” This was an encouragement of violence by the Turkey’s head of state.

As the Cyprus Medical Association, we believe that TMA’s anti-war statement regarding Turkey’s military operation in northern Syria is fully compatible with worldwide accepted humanitarian values but also with the medical ethics and deontology that should characterize our profession. As Medical Associations we have a responsibility to support human rights and we are strongly condemning any attacks on freedom of expression.

We have to secure that in all European countries, physicians are represented by National Medical Associations (NMA), which are autonomous non-governmental organizations, and the state should respect their independence and their professional opinion on issues related with healthcare and humanitarian matters.

Attempts that are aiming to violate the freedom of expression, state policies that provoke intolerances and actions that are targeting to alter the autonomy of a National Medical Association are characteristics of authoritarian regimes, are not compatible with the overall democratic values and could create more problems in regards with the smooth operation of the overall society.

Thus, on behalf of the Cyprus Medical Association, we would like to express our solidarity towards the Turkish Medical Association and its members, and we hope that the Turkish government will finally realise that pluralism of opinions and human - centric policies are key elements of a Democratic and a peaceful society.

Kind Regards,
